Campo Alegre Yellow Ochre

The Joules & Joules Campo Alegre Yellow Ochre Oil Stick is formulated from our monobasic oil paint of the same name, adapted with precise proportions of beeswax and carnauba wax. This composition ensures controlled drying of the outer paint film and a creamy yet firm texture, allowing for both direct application and thin glazing layers. It produces a transparent, earthy yellow with moderate saturation and soft coverage, ideal for delicate nuances and luminous effects in landscapes, flesh tones, and natural backgrounds.

The pigment used is limonite, a hydrated iron oxide (Fe₂O₃·xH₂O), extracted from natural deposits in the locality of Campo Alegre, in Bambuí, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Internationally identified as Pigment Yellow 43 (PY43), it features fine particle size, high physicochemical stability, and excellent lightfastness (rating I), ensuring durability and chromatic fidelity over time. Its transparency and gentle tonality allow for gradual combinations and mixing with other colors, creating subtle transitions and depth effects.

Historically, natural yellow ochres such as Campo Alegre Yellow Ochre have been used since Prehistory, through Egyptian, Greco-Roman, medieval, and Renaissance civilizations, due to their stability, availability, and versatility. This pigment was traditionally employed in grounds, flesh tones, landscapes, and glazes, maintaining consistency and permanence across centuries.

The Joules & Joules Campo Alegre Yellow Ochre Oil Stick translates this legacy into a contemporary formulation, offering artists an authentic, natural, resistant, and reliable color, capable of conveying the earthy and historical character of the pigment without compromising the plasticity or texture of the artwork.
