Rio Acima Hematite
 
The Joules & Joules Rio Acima Hematite Oil Stick is made from the monobasic oil paint Rio Acima Hematite, derived from natural earths from the Rio Acima region in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The formulation carefully incorporates beeswax and carnauba wax, ensuring uniform drying on the surface and a creamy yet firm consistency inside, ideal for transparent applications and the gradual build-up of tones. The result is a dark, matte, transparent brown with soft saturation and delicate coverage, perfect for subtle nuances and depth effects in landscapes or earthy compositions.
 
The base pigment, natural brown iron oxide, provides excellent physicochemical stability, Class I lightfastness, and long-lasting durability. Its coarser texture preserves the characteristic mineral feel, allowing for gradual layering and refined control of transparency, even in thin applications. Despite its low tinting strength, Rio Acima Hematite offers tonal richness and subtlety in the modeling of shadows and earthy hues.
 
Historically, earth pigments such as hematite, goethite, and magnetite have been used since Prehistory and became firmly established in Renaissance painting due to their stability and availability.
